Dear Friends:
What an extraordinary Christmas gift the music industry has given Special Olympics athletes around the world. My warm thanks to these great artists, publishers, manufacturers and distributors for their generosity.
And to the music buyer, thank you too! You have also given a Christmas present--a gift of caring and support for some of the world's most courageous citizens.
Special Olympics is the fastest growing amateur sports program in the world, with almost a million and a half athletes in every U.S. state and 72 countries. Since it began in 1968, it has proved that people with mental retardation can develop skills in every type of summer and winter sport. And the world has taken to its heart their shining example
of striving--whether it's an athlete with Down's syndrome who wins a medal in gymnastics or a young woman who learns so slowly but runs the 100 meter dash in 11 seconds.
Throughout the world there are 300 million people with mental retardation. Many of them still are shut away denied the chance to know the joy and sense of achievement
that come from the mastery of skills most of us take for granted To bring the "skill, courage, sharing and joy" of Special Olympics to all the millions who still stand on the sidelines, we need everyone's help. The stars of this album join me in asking you to become a part of this great world movement for love and justice.
Thank you for purchasing this record. And a Merry Christmas.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver
Chairman,
Special Olympics International
