Christmas Peace
Elvis Presley
__________________________________________________

The importance and success of Elvis Presley as rock 'n' roll's foremost artist is beyond dispute. However, little is written about the outstanding achievement of his seasonal music.

The 8 Christmas songs featured on the original ELVIS CHRISTMAS ALBUM in 1957 have each sold more than 15 million copies alone in the U.S., with ''Blue Christmas" as the all-time favorite approaching 22 million. "If Every Day Was Like Christmas," first released as a single in 1966, is over 11 million, and all of the songs from THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF CHRISTMAS, issued in 1971, have passed 5 million. The original Christmas albums combined with latter day compilations have earned Elvis 15 platinum certifications a number that's still growing every year.

Even more unique was his commitment to religious music. Attending church since he was just a small boy in Tupelo, Elvis had a burning ambition to become a singer in a gospel quartet.

As a child, he attended "singings" at the local church with his parents, Gladys and Vernon, and sang along with the congregation. They left an impression on Elvis, as years later he would recall, ''There were these singers, then there was the preachers. They cut up all over the place jumpily' on the piano, movin' every which way...I guess I learned a lot from them."

When the family moved to Memphis, Elvis, as a young man, attended concerts known as "All-Night Gospel Sings at the Ellis Auditorium. These shows were far more "showbiz,' with many top artists performing. The family favorites were the Blackwood Brothers and the Statesmen Quartet, but Elvis' appreciation of religious music was much broader than that. He used to say that he knew every gospel song ever written, and among his biggest idols were Mahalia Jackson and the Golden Gate Quartet. After a successful performance of 'Peace In The Valley,' on The Ed Sullivan Show in January 1957, Elvis recorded 4 religious songs that were subsequently released on a 7" extended play. Titled "Peace In The Valley" it sold more than half a million copies in a few short months at the peak of Elvis' rock 'n' roll career.

Three religious albums followed. HIS HAND IN MINE in 1960, HOW GREAT THOU ART in 1967, and finally HE TOUCHED ME in 1972. Whereas it's ironic at best that Elvis Presley never won a Grammy Award for any of his groundbreaking rock 'n' roll or pop hits, it's well deserved that he has been awarded 3 Grammy's for his sacred recordings. Prestigious awards have in this case been mirrored by commercial success. All Elvis gospel recordings are million sellers most of them multi-million. Classics like "Peace In The Valley" "Crying In The Chapel" and "How Great Thou Art" are now in excess of 10 million sales substantially more than most artists' commercial records.

This collection includes all of Elvis' original 20 Christmas songs as well as a broad selection of his greatest sacred performances. It's yet another testimony to the overwhelming success of Elvis Presley and the versatility of his art.
