BILL COSBY IS A VERY FUNNY FELLOW RIGHT!

By ALLAN SHERMAN

Bill Cosby’s “Noah” (the last three bands on Side One) is a masterpiece, even though nobody has heard it yet.  It’s warm, and human, and honest, and deeply moving, and it’s funny.  It’s going to be a classic, and that means two things: first, a lot of comics will steal it, even though no one will ever do it as well as Bill; and second, if Bill wanted to, he could make a living for the rest of his life just from the excitement and joy this one great bit will create.  But Bill Cosby, if I am any judge of talent, will keep coming up with fresh, new material and will grow everyday in stature and importance on the American comedy scene.

Bill Cosby has a wonderful, cockeyed, fresh sense of humor.  He is so good that what he has is more than talent; he has the gift of comedy.  He has something that makes you feel delight when you’re with him…in an office, in a nightclub, or standing on a street corner.  He has joy in being alive, and he communicates it to you, so that when you’re with him, you too are glad you’re alive.

Bill Cosby would be funny if he were green or purple or chartreuse.  He’s funny because he can feel for people – and he can communicate that feeling.  Listen to “Hoof And Mouth” and see if you can avoid falling on the floor at the conversation between the intelligent cow and the stupid one.  Listen to “Toss of the Coin,” and rediscover (when you stop screaming with laughter) your own sense of fairness.  Listen to “Greasy Kid Stuff,” which should put an end once and for all to the use of football players in television commercials.

I wish I could look at your face when you first hear this album.  I wish I could be with you when you first discover Bill Cosby.  I don’t know who you are; all I know is that you are one of millions of people who buy records and who made my life so crazy and wonderful during the last year.  I want to return the favor.  That’s why I’m so proud and happy for the chance to introduce you to Bill Cosby.

It isn’t every day that we come in contact with greatness.  The day you first listen to this album will be one of those days for you.
