All The Dave Clark Five Recordings were recorded at Lansdowne Studios, London and digitally re-mastered at Lansdowne/CTS Studios, London, England.
______________________________________________________________

The DAVE CLARK FIVE's own unique brand of music sold in excess of fifty million records. They were the very first English group to tour the United States, spearheading the British Invasion. During their first two years in the US they scored no less than fifteen consecutive Top Twenty hits, more than anyone except The Beatles.

They took the world by storm and helped change the Rock scene, blasting hit after hit over the world's radio airwaves. Dave was Britain's first independent artist/record producer. He actually owned all his own recordings and leased them out to major record companies for a specific period which was unheard of in its day.

Dave produced all the DC5's records and co-wrote most of them, and he also managed the group at the same time. The Dave Clark Five achieved the seemingly impossible feat
of a semi-professional outfit-without an agent or manager-logging up two consecutive number one hit records. The first was "Glad All Over", ringing up cash sales in excess of two-and-a- half million copies, followed by"Bits and Pieces" which repeated the success.

Throughout the Dave Clark Five's record breaking US tours, Dave was often overwhelmed by the calibre of stars who opened the DC5 concerts. Artistes he had admired from afar such as Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, a relatively unknown Neil Diamond and three young ladies from Detroit, Diana Ross and The Supremes. Even a new act called Sonny and Cher opened a DC5 concert while riding high with their first number one hit, "I Got You Babe". Dave discovered an unknown group playing at a club in New York and was so impressed with their performance that he asked them to join the DC5 on one of their US tours. The group was called The Young Rascals and the tour helped launch their classic hits "Good Loving'' and "Groovin' On A Sunday Afternoon".

Another unknown group supported the DC5 in Australia; that group was The Bee Gees. The Dave Clark Five's songs and style influenced and inspired many American artistes as well as heavy rock groups like Kiss, Cheap Trick and The E Street Band. In a 1993 interview in Melody Maker, the UK music industry publication, Eddie Van Halen named his Top 12 records putting the DC5 record of "Any Way You Want It" at No.1 and said: This was the first band I ever got into. I still listen to this now. Once I heard them I wanted to play drums...". In his book 'The Big Beat - Conversations With Rock's Great Drummers', Bruce Springsteen's drummer Max Weinberg wrote: "Seeing The Dave Clark Five in concert in New York was my very first experience of a 'live' rock concert. That DC5 beat. That ENERGY. It really got to me, it sounded fantastic!"

Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of Motown Records and the Motown Sound stated that some of the early Motown records used Dave Clark licks (fills) and legendary record producer Phil Spector said, ..."The Dave Clark Five broke all language barriers with their phenomenally successful unique sound on record".

The Dave Clark Five appeared in Two Royal Variety Shows before Her Majesty The Queen and HRH Prince Philip. They topped the bill at the London Palladium. Made six
sell-out tours of the United States. Appeared 18 times on America's coast-to-coast Ed Sullivan TV Show with its 70 million viewers each week, a record for any British group. Broke the house records at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City with a dozen capacity houses in three days. Toured the world playing to capacity audiences including the United Kingdom. Played to over a quarter-of-a-million fans in the Philippines. Strung together a succession of world chart topping singles and albums, including over 30 global hit singles.

The Dave Clark Five starred in the film "Catch Us If You Can" which became one of Britain's Top Twenty box office draws of 1965 and charted record business globally with receipts which escalated above the million dollar line in its first weeks showing
in Chicago and New York. In the U.S. the film was titled "Having A Wild Weekend" and Bosley Crowther of The New York Times named it the best young generation film of its era. Dave chose an unknown director whose television documentary
work he had admired. His name was John Boorman, and "Catch Us If You Can" was John's first feature film which launched his phenomenally successsful movie career as
one of the world's top movie directors. Dave wrote, produced, directed and starred in "Hold On - It's The Dave Clark Five", a 35mm filmed television spectacular with special guests Richard Chamberlain and Lulu, which was to gather plaudits from the hypercritical National British Press… said the Daily Express: "Outglitters any spectacular on the screen this year"... the Sunday Mirror eulogised "...so called one hour spectaculars
are going to look like a slow ramble through a stamp album after this show"... and another National Daily declared... "he deserves The Queen's Award for enterprise". In the US, Variety said: "Unbelievably good ...embracing style, ingenuity and high stepping pace".

These were typical of the laudatory reviews that Dave received. During the '60s, Dave pioneered the art of promotional videos by being the first artiste to produce and direct an original 35mm film featuring the DC5's latest single, which premiered to over 70 million viewers on America's Ed Sullivan TV Show and was subsequently shown on TV throughout the world. Dave also produced and directed another first; a short 35mm film for the big screen entitled "HITS IN ACTION" which featured a montage of DC5 hits and was shown in cinema and movie theatres throughout the world. Both received critical acclaim as being the first glossy commercials promoting artists and their recordings, now known as music videos. Dave, a perfectionist at all times, wanted to learn his craft thoroughly and as his sights were always set on acting, producing and directing, he went on to study drama and theatre for three years at London's prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama, of which Lord Olivier was patron. Dave also studied the art of film and acting in Hollywood under the direction of Lee Strasberg at the famous Actors' Studio. In 1969, The Dave Clark Five scored another first with the release of a rock medley of nine classic tracks, the "Good Old Rock 'n Roll" maxi single, now known in the record industry as 12 inch singles/mega mixes. It entered the UK's Top Thirty in its first week and became a worldwide smash hit. This was the first maxi single to achieve Top five status.

The Dave Clark Five continued to strike gold throughout the world and in May 1970, while enjoying yet another million seller, the group disbanded.

In 1978, Dave released a special Dave Clark Five album entitled "Twenty Five Thumping Great Hits". The album received critical acclaim and the demand was so great that it was awarded Silver and Gold status before it was released. The Dave Clark Five received Silver, Gold and Platinum album awards for its huge success.

Ken Barnes, Editor of the American music industry's "R and R" (Radio and Record) magazine wrote: "Dave and the boys had the hot hit singles market cornered. From February 1964 to June 1966 the DC5 racked up 15 consecutive top 20 hits (more
than The Stones, The Beach Boys, or anyone but The Beatles) and provide ample proof that Dave Clark Five records rock harder and harder than just about anything you'll ever hear. Their raucous records were a crucial part of a still-unsurpassed musical explosion. The Dave Clark Five's music lives on. The rockers set a roaring pace, unlike anything their British contemporaries laid down. The songs were short, but in top
gear. The DC5 could accomplish more in two minutes than almost anyone else could in 40."

America's Rolling Stone magazine published a critical illustrated history of Rock 'n' Roll which said of The Dave Clark Five "... Of course, as 'Time' (magazine) so pithily put it at the time, their singles were primarily distinguished by an 'air-hammer' beat. But that's just another way of saying BIG beat, and all the Dave Clark Five singles were marked by a large, thick yet expansive wall-of-sound production that made them not only distinctive in their day, but ensured that they would sound exciting - more than mere period pieces - to this day. And that's something that can be said of almost none of the hits of their contemporaries. Clark himself sang, composed, played drums, produced and even managed the group which has, over the years, been severely underrated."

During the '70's, Dave bought the exclusive rights to the classic British television series of the '60's, "Ready Steady Go!" The series starred every major British and American rock act of the era, from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Dave Clark Five to Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, and American 'greats' such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and The Beach Boys.

In November 1983, DAVE CLARK INTERNATIONAL released the first in a series of video cassettes produced by Dave and taken from the series, entitled "Ready Steady Go!" Volume One. It went to No.1 in the UK Video Charts where it continued to appear in the Top 50 for over six months. Its release was heralded by excellent reviews from the National Press including The Times in London and The New York Times in the U.S. Success continued with "Ready Steady Go!" Volumes Two and Three, and "Ready Steady Go!" Special Editions of "Otis Redding Live" and "The Sounds Of Motown", featuring every major Motown act of the '60s, and released in May '85.

"The Beatles Live" entered the UK Video Week chart at the No.1 spot and also achieved a gold award in the U.S. for its huge success. It broke all records in Japan, by becoming the biggest selling music video ever and repeated this success throughout the rest of the world. In June '85, Dave produced "Ready Steady Go!" which was shown nationwide on Channel 4 Television. This was the first showing of the series in the U.K. since its original 'live' transmission in the '60s. The response from both press and public was such that Channel 4 quadrupled its viewing figures and the show jumped straight into the No. 5 slot in its national TV ratings.

Also during 1985, Dave returned to the recording studios to produce a galaxy of
stars for the "TIME" concept album, which includes performances by Laurence Olivier, Cliff Richard, Freddie Mercury, Julian Lennon, Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach,
Ashford and Simpson, and Stevie Wonder. The "TIME" concept album was the first album to have a holographic cover. As well as devising, creating, co-writing the book, music and lyrics and producing TIME The Musical - both on record and on stage - Dave had the privilege of directing the late Laurence Olivier in his portrayal of 'Akash', his final theatrical performance which received enormous critical acclaim from audiences, The National Press, TV and media alike.

"TIME" The Musical had its world premiere in London's West End on April 9, 1986 and during its two year run, broke all box office records and was seen by over one million people. Dave devised and created the musical because he felt the time was right for something new and exciting in theatre. In December 1989, Dave personally introduced the American television premiere of "Ready Steady Go!" on the prestigious Disney channel, America's family network which described "Ready
Steady Go!" as "a timeless treasure". The series aired until 1991.

In November 1992, two songs co-written and produced by Dave for his friend, the late Freddie Mercury, 'Time' and 'In My Defence' were released and have to date achieved triple platinum status.

Currently, "Ready Steady Go!" is back on television in the U.K. and America.
The Dave Clark Five catalogue of recordings have been one of the most sought after collections in rock history having been off the U.S. and Canadian market - in any form - for almost two decades. Dave has now chosen to rerelease The DC5 recordings in America and Canada through the Disney Corporation's Hollywood Records. Moreover, the sound that rocked the world and sold in excess of 50 million records is released for the first time on CD.

I have always maintained that I was very lucky to meet four guys who all had the same interests and goals in life. THE DC5 was originally formed for the fun of playing the music we all enjoyed. Each of the boys had his own special talent but the combination is what really made it work. It was not just THE DAVE CLARK FIVE; it was MIKE, DENIS, RICK, LENNY and DAVE. It was the five individual talents that made THE DC5 so successful... I just happened to be the guy at the front.

We'd like to say thanks to:

The hundred thousand football supporters at the World Cup Final, Wembley Stadium, England, 1966, for "Live In The Sky.

Our recording engineers - Adrian Kerridge (1963-1968) and John Macswith (1968-1975). Adrian was the very first recording engineer I worked with. His technical wizardry was a great contribution to the DC5's hits and I was knocked out to work with him again remastering the DC5 onto CD, with the assistance of Mike Brown.

Madeline Bell and Doris Troy - our original soul sisters.

And a special thanks to everyone in the class of '69 at the Central School of Speech and Drama, London, for getting it together on "Everybody Get Together."

And to all our friends for keeping the faith.  DC
