_________________________________________________

The continuing popularity of Hank Williams, almost a decade after his tragic death in the mid-1950's, is a tribute not only to his ability as a singer, but also his stature as a composer. His songs have attained the eminence of standards, not only in this country, but throughout the world. They are recorded by country singer, pop singer, and folk artists; and hardly a month passes in which an album with songs written by Hank Williams is not issued by at least one record label.

Perhaps one of the reasons that so many Hank Williams songs have endured, and in fact grown ten-fold in popularity since his death, has been due to their basic and appealingly human qualities. For if ever there was a man who drew upon life for his art, that man was Hank Williams. His songs are the raw emotional outpourings of a man involved in the most complex of all human emotions, love. They deal at times with the happiness that love can bring, as well as its sorrows and loneliness when a love affair ends badly. His songs come straight from life itself - sometimes from his own tangled life - and they tell their stories, happy or unhappy, with a simple imagery and directness that gets across their message with searing impact.

William's influence on other writers, both country and pop, has been even more important than has yet been realized. He stripped away the romantic June-moon fluff that once used to dominate pop material and injected in his songs an intensity and honesty that reached right out to the average man, and eventually even to the sophisticate.

Hank Williams' songs came straight from the heart, and more and more writers have since followed his trail. Today's country writers, and pop writers like Ray Charles, will always be in Hank Williams' debt.

This album of Hank Williams hits contains 14 of his most popular recordings, all sung by Hank in his personal and moving style. The selections include such blockbusters as Crazy Heart, I'm Sorry For You My Friend, Window Shopping, Ramblin' Man, A Mansion On The Hill, Nobody's Lonesome For Me, Move It One Over, Howlin' At The Moon, and many more. Some are cheery, others are sad, but they add up to a hit song hall of fame. They also add up to a meaningful listening experience, both for the qualities of the songs themselves, and for Hank William's way of singing them.
