INXS
KICK
Atlantic Records
R2 78204
Going into Kick, the writing partnership of Andrew and Michael certainly worked well, but the main thing was that INXS had scored a massive hit in America with “What You Need.” That gave them a more optimistic and confident air, because they were just getting bigger and bigger. And the fact that we’d worked together before meant they were at ease. The band asked me to use their engineer, David Nicholas, for the recording. I went along with the idea, and it was fantastic – there was a direct communication with him. To a large extent, the funkier direction of Kick was born from the songs, but there was always that underlying element – especially in the drumming of Jon Farriss.
In 1986, before we started the album, I met up with the band when they did a gig in Paris. They gave me demos of “Mystify” and “Monkey” (retitled “Move On”). After initial recordings it became apparent that they still didn’t have an album’s worth of tracks. We needed more strong songs, and I fought very hard for that. With an imposed couple of months off to write, Andrew, Michael, and I demoed stuff in Hong Kong, and it produced some really important material. “Need You Tonight” and “Kick” were written and demoed there, and that gap gave them a chance to think and realize what was and wasn’t working. It swung the album ‘round.
At Rhinoceros we recorded the album on digital, with the drums recorded analog, but, most importantly, we mixed it to tape. In rehearsals at Sydney Opera House, there was this real sense of occasion. The band were really on the up and had an incredible momentum building – more people were discovering them all the time. Michael was very driven. He had an ambition and a sense of what was right. That album couldn’t have been made without his intuition – it led that record.
With the sessions going so smoothly, it felt like we could do backing tracks forever. Certain songs were to remain faithful to their demo counterparts, while others were changed drastically. “Never Tear Us Apart” was quite different originally. It was a piano thing – a sort of Fats Domino kind of thing, very Stonesy, with an early ‘60s vibe. I came up with the idea of substituting the piano for strings, and that changed the whole feel of it. I added a counter-string melody, and the finished version moved quite a long way from the original. But the point is that the song was so strong in the first place. Other songs were based very much on the demos, and I think I’m right in saying some stuff for “Mediate” was taken directly from Andrew’s demo and used on the final recording.
Generally speaking, I suppose making Kick was the best fun I’ve ever had – it was the pinnacle. Sydney’s got such a great vibe.
