Here are Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane, and John Stewart, singing lustily and providing their own accompaniment in a new batch of ballads that reflect the Kingston Trio approach at its finest.  Once more the boys have drawn their songs from a variety of times and places, revitalizing them all with their Famous Name Brand of zest and musicianship.  The stirring song “The New Frontier” is as new as its title would imply.  It was written by John Stewart, whose comments appear below:

Looking back through history, there have been key phrases that have long outlived the men who have said them.  They have helped us win battles and have formed thoughts that have influenced countless lives.  Horace Greeley said, “Go West, Young Man,” and “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death.”

To me, “The New Frontier” is such a phrase.  You can apply these three words to almost every aspect of our modern-day life.  It seems to me to be the watchword of the new generation.  Americans have always looked West, and now they have traveled as far as they could go.  Everyone is saying, “Where to now?  What’s left to see?”

Very few of us will be able to travel in outer space, which is, needless to say, a vital part of The New Frontier.  So now, as never before, an age of introspection is reaching every one of us.  Now we must become ourselves what we want our nation to be.

When I first heard the words “The New Frontier,” I said to myself, “A phrase like this needs to be sung”; and like all memorable words of history this to us is a phrase of action, as is now being demonstrated and put into reality by such people as the Peace Corps volunteers.  And so, to these unselfish Americans, we dedicate this song and this album.
