Buddy Holly would have turned 75 on September 9 of this year and we will be celebrating without him. But are we really without him? The recordings in this collection certainly could convince you otherwise. They are rendered with such great passion and personality; put forward with such deep and abiding faith in song; we can be convinced that the living spirit of Buddy Holly will continue to influence music and musicians for generations to come.
The pleasures involved in putting this collection together were plentiful. Gathering our favorite artists and watching them choose songs from the Holly catalogue is splendid occupation. And one by one the songs arrived and somehow we seemed to be gathering pieces of a complex and original puzzle – we’re able to see the path that Buddy Holly cut all those years ago – that traces back to the roots of rock ‘n roll and shapes so much that has sprung forth since.
Buddy Holly was twenty-two when he died. One can only imagine where he would have taken his music in the years that were denied him. And while we wonder, we can marvel at the depth and scope of his output; enjoy what he has left us with and pass his music to rock and rollers everywhere. Songs that always seem to make you feel better about feeling more; songs that remind you to be you; songs that bring epic romance to the everyday, everyday …
Happy Birthday, Buddy Holly.
