Sisyphus, son of Aeolus the windgod, a mortal, founded Corinth and peopled it with men sprung from mushrooms.  He betrayed secrets of the gods, and Zeus sent Pluto out to capture Sisyphus.  Our hero tricked Pluto and held him prisoner for three days thereby cheating Death (with Pluto as captive no man could die!)

Zeus finally caught up with Sisyphus and sent him to the Underworld, where he could not survive and so got permission from Pluto to return to Earth for a brief stay.  But when Sisyphus once again partook of the pleasures and beauty of this world – water, sun, flowers, grass, sea – he refused to ever leave again.  Thus, the Judges of the Dead decided on the ultimate punishment for Sisyphus.  They condemned Sisyphus to his eternal Fate – he was to roll a large rock up a hill and over the top, but every time he reached the top, the stone would plunge back to the bottom of the hill.
