Sure it was, Tommy.  Just like it always is.  Either something you’ve said or done or sung that breaks people up.  And don’t try to deny that it’s usually something you’ve said that drives your brother Dick to desperation and your audience to delight.

Tom and Dick Smothers just can’t help being funny – a fact that is marvelously apparent on this album.  For instance there is the song about the Indians.  The reasons why Tom is so sore at the Indians may be vague, but there is no question but that his befuddled interpretation of American History is one that even Big Chief Sitting Bull would love.

Then there is that bit of fishy sociology in which we discover that “Crabs Walk Sideways” and, incidentally, have other bad habits.  But when they lower their sideburns and launch into that saga of tormented teen-age love, “Jenny Brown,” Tom and Dick really rock.  And, not neglecting the really important issues of the day, Tom shares with us his practical solution to the “Population Explosion.”

The Smothers Brothers are men of many talents – not the least of which is their musical ability.  In fact they have received so many requests to do more serious songs that they decided to include some in this album.  One of the most beautiful of these is “Carnival,” the theme from Black Orpheus, whose haunting rhythms have made it a modern classic.  But the rarely heard lyrics which Tom and Dick introduce give the song a whole new dimension.  “Anne Marie And Jean Pierre” and “Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair” also demonstrate the gentle treatment the Smothers Brothers give a serious song.

In the past year Tom and Dick, America’s great unstrung heroes, have clowned and sung their way through hundreds of concerts and have appeared many times before the vast television audience.  With each appearance they win new friends for their deliciously irreverent approach to music.  Whether you’re a new acquaintance or an old friend, keep this album within easy reach – you’ll be playing it often.

David Carroll, the producer of this album, has worked with us since we made our first record at the Purple Onion several years ago.  This will make our fifth LP.  On each one he has used his considerable talents to make order out of our often chaotic recording sessions – even though this sometimes has meant spending all night over a hot tape machine to meet a release date.  So, David, come out from behind your Ampex and let us say thanks for all your hours and all your help.

MERCURY RECORDS
AMERICA’S FIRST FAMILY OF FINE RECORDINGS

This MERCURY record is the result of the most modern recording techniques in the phonograph industry.

In STEREO – The 15° cutter slant angle is utilized, the latest development in the art of disc recording.  The vertical-tracking-angle between cartridge and groove greatly reduces intermodulation distortion and gives the utmost reproduction of the original sound through its dynamic depth control and reliable stylus tracking.  To protect your stereo recording, play only on a phonograph with stereo reproducing cartridge according to the RIAA standards.

In MONO – The master tapes are transferred directly through the finest Ampex 300 series tape machine to a specially designed power amplifier which drives the BBC Grampian Feedback Cutting Head.  Because of the simplicity of our new recording techniques, quality listening on either stereo or monaural phonographs is assured.

In monaural or stereo, your MERCURY record will give you the truest possible reproduction of the original sound.
