The idea for this album was not original with me. Helen and I get our biggest thrill from enjoying entertainment with our children, Linda Lee, Spike, Jr., Leslie Ann and Gina Maria. With sex and violence the major trend in motion pictures, stage shows with family appear almost extinct, and my entire family getting powder burns from watching Private Eyes and Cowboys shoot it out on the T.V. screen, it hasn’t been easy to sustain our togetherness.
However at Christmas time our search for FAMILY FUN is naturally much easier. One of the major delights we share, not only with each other, but with anyone who drops over, is group singing. My children don’t think I’ll ever be another Como, in fact they wonder how I got the six Gold Records I have hanging in my study, but at least they like my spirit and we all have a ball. Instead of gathering around the piano we make it with the Hi-Fi set and records. Not so long ago, Spike Jr., said, “Why do we have to keep changing records to get all the songs we like to sing? WHY CAN’T WE HAVE ALL THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC WE WANT ON ONE RECORD?”
And so Music Lovers, here it is! THIRTY-FIVE of the most wonderful CHRISTMAS SONGS, HYMNS AND CAROLS, from the most sacred of all, SILENT NIGHT, sung reverently by my twenty-five voice choir, to the laugh provoking TWO FRONT TEETH, tenderly rendered by the mischievous George Rock; from Irving Berlin’s melodic desire shared by millions, I’M DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS to JINGLE BELLS, sung even in Pig-Latin by the City Slicker Juniors (seven of my thirty-one nieces and nephews).
Jud Conlon, whom I consider to be the most brilliant choral arranger in television and recording today, not only added greatly to his many artistic achievements in vocal scoring for this album, but has purposely made the melody and harmony parts so easy to follow that even I sound like I graduated from Julliard, Magna Cum Louder, when we gather at our house to sing.
In “IT’S A SPIKE JONES CHRISTMAS,” I sincerely hope I have created something that will be enjoyed as long as children enjoy Christmas!
