THE STEVE MILLER BAND
ANTHOLOGY: THE BEST OF THE STEVE MILLER BAND 1968-1972
Original 1972 double album liner notes
__________________________________________________
Remember those muzzy, fuzz-toned, long-distance photos of Steve Miller on his previous albums? On most of them, you couldn’t distinguish him from the session’s comb-and-tissue-paper player, because Miller was, in essence, a complex man in hiding – a young, bluff, abnormally-articulate expatriate Texan, unsure of himself in both personal and musical directions.
Let me be the first to break the news that things have changed. Listen to Miller now, in 1972, talking about Anthology:
“This is the first time I ever had the confidence to reveal myself in public. Always before, you know, people more or less needed to be fans to like the albums. Oh, I mean there’d be some good cuts and a couple of not-so-good cuts, and then some cuts that I don’t even like to remember. But Anthology is what I always wanted to make – two good LPs that’ll hold up. This is the first consistently good album I’ve ever made.”
I agree. There’s something new here. As always, Miller is coaxing forth various forms of the boogie that shapes and affects all our lives – ballads, rock and roll, country and folk music – but for the first time, a coherent and mature identity emerges.
That’s Steve Miller. Close to the bone.
Play it as it lays, my fellow Americans, and you’ll see precisely what I mean.
