There are many nights that stand out in my mind as being magical musical experiences. Only a few, however, rank up there with May 3rd 2003, when Gov’t Mule filmed and recorded “The Deepest End” concert at The Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. While recording and/or filming a show can often bring added tension to the situation along with a whole slew of new, uncontrollable elements which can add up to a recipe for disaster, on May 3rd they all seemed to work in our favor.
Set during “Jazz Fest” (The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival), many of the special guests who were to join us on stage were already in New Orleans performing other shows…some that same night! Many others flew in from all over the country specifically to be part of this event. As is usually the case with Gov’t Mule, there was a very limited window for rehearsal – all during the day’s sound-check. Some of the guests were playing songs they’d never played before, in some cases with musicians they only knew by reputation.
The whole afternoon was filled with people meeting each other for the first time, sharing anecdotes (and New Orleans cuisine) while waiting patiently for their tiny sliver of rehearsal time. Those guests who had played with us before got virtually no rehearsal or sound-check, but most hung out the whole day just to watch and soak up the vibe. Those who had other shows trickled in & out, sometimes earlier or later than expected, based on their own delays & dilemmas. Some appeared at the last minute, having just heard about the event, and played confidently with no rehearsal time or whatever could be scraped together in the dressing room as the show was going…and going…and going…
We started at about 10 after 10 PM and went ‘til about 3:50 AM with a short intermission. The set list, which was constantly being changed during “rehearsal,” continued to be altered and shuffled during the actual show based on some of the musicians with other commitments not being able to make it back to the Saenger for their projected time slots. Everyone went above and beyond the call of duty to make it happen, and that, mixed with a large dose of spontaneity, made for an amazing night of music which was thankfully all captured on tape and on film.
Enjoy.

Very similar to the original version on “Life Before Insanity” (LBI). Also appears on “Wintertime Blues: The Benefit Concert” (WTB).
GAME FACE 8:36 CD 1
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Greg Rzab – bass
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Not played very much after Woody’s death, brought back in the fold recently with Rzab. Different every night but similar arrangement to the original on “Dose” (DOSE).
LARGER THAN LIFE 6:11 CD 1
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Greg Rzab – bass
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Also not played much after August 2000 but welcomed back into the set list recently. Similar to the original version on DOSE.
BLINDMAN IN THE DARK 15:38 CD 1/DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Dave Schools – bass
Karl Denson – tenor saxophone
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
This way-extended arrangement was forged while Karl was on tour with Gov’t Mule (GM) in February 2003. Only played a handful of times and never with Dave Schools before this night.
Original version appears on DOSE.
WHICH WAY DO WE RUN? 6:56 CD 1
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Dave Schools – bass
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Only played a few times, always with Schools, who also played on the studio version. Very similar to original arrangement on “The Deep End – Vol. 2” (TDE2).
FOOL’S MOON 6:11 CD 1
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Dave Schools – bass
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
We weren’t going to perform this song, as Jack Bruce couldn’t be there, but Schools expressed interest hence this version, similar to original on “The Deep End – Vol. 1” (TDE1).
SCO-MULE 8:56 CD 1/DVD
Warren Haynes – guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Victor Wooten – bass
Bernie Worrell – keyboards
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Victor Wooten is someone who was on our original list of bass players to record on TDE CDs, but it never worked out. Thankfully, he was able to be in New Orleans for this night and contribute greatly to “Sco-Mule” in Chris Wood’s absence. Quite different from the original version on TDE1, which also includes Bernie.
PATCHWORK QUILT 6:06 CD 1
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Victor Wooten – bass
Bela Fleck – electric banjo
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Having run into Bela and Victor in New York City during The Allman Brothers Band’s (ABB) Beacon run, I invited both of them to join us in New Orleans for this event. They accepted, so I had to come up with songs to play. By the time a decision was reached and tapes sent out, they only had a few days to learn the songs and since Danny and Matt had never played this one either, it meant that I was the only one on stage who had ever performed it. I love this version. Very raw, very exciting. Original version appears on Phil Lesh & Friends’ “There And Back Again.” A solo acoustic version also appears on Warren Haynes’ (WH) “Lone EP” (LEP).
LAY OF THE SUNFLOWER 7:35 CD 1/DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Rob Wasserman – bass
Bela Fleck – electric banjo
Written by Robert Hunter, Warren Haynes
Ice Nine Publishing, Inc. (ASCAP)
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Rob Wasserman was also someone who was on “the list” for The Deep End – a list too long to make a dent in. This song seemed perfect for his “upright” approach. Bela’s banjo replaces David Grisman’s mandolin, giving it a different but equally cool vibe. Original version on TDE2.
JOHN THE REVELATOR 6:59 CD 1/DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Dirty Dozen Brass Band Horns:
Kevin Harris – tenor saxophone
Roger Lewis – baritone saxophone
Julius McKee – sousaphone
Efram Towns – trumpet
Sammie Williams – trombone
Traditional
Arranged by Warren Haynes, Matt Abts, Sammie Williams, Kevin Harris, Efram Towns, Roger Lewis, Julius McKee
All publishing administered by Bug Music
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI)
Jake Henry Music (ASCAP)
Roger H. Lewis Music (ASCAP)
Efram Towns Publishing (ASCAP)
Donky Do Honk Publishing (ASCAP)
Julius McKee Publishing (ASCAP)
Sammie R. Williams Music (ASCAP)
When we got word that the Dirty Dozen Brass Band Horns were available we immediately smiled at the concept, but what to play? Danny came up with the idea for “John the Rev” and I asked the horns to come up with an arrangement and to just “be themselves – no rules.” Love this version. GM original version appears on DOSE.
CHAMELEON 16:25 DVD
Warren Haynes – guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – clavinet
Paul Jackson, Jr. – bass
Bernie Worrell – organ
Dirty Dozen Brass Band Horns
Written by Herbie Hancock, Paul Jackson, Harvey William Mason, Jr., Bernie Maupin
Hancock Music Company (BMI)
Never before played. We heard a couple of days before the show that Paul, who co-wrote “Chameleon,” was around if we were interested. Paul having been on “the list” originally, we said “absolutely.” We knew the horns knew “Chameleon” and we all knew it from our youth, so it seemed to make perfect sense. This is us, totally improvising – flying by the seat of our pants. Original version appears on Herbie Hancock’s “Headhunters.”
BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN 9:49 CD 2/DVD
(contains parts of “When Doves Cry”)
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
George Porter, Jr. – bass and background vocals
Written by Warren Haynes, Danny Louis
“When Doves Cry” written by Prince
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Normorto (BMI)
Controversy Music (ASCAP) administered by Universal Music Corp.
We stumbled onto this arrangement (which includes “When Doves Cry”) while Porter was on the road with us and it just sort of stuck. Very different from the original version on TDE1.
TIME TO CONFESS 8:27 CD 2
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
George Porter, Jr. – bass
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
This song also has grown since the studio version, which also includes George Porter. Original version appears on TDE2.
MULE 13:41 DVD
(contains parts of “I’ve Been Working”)
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
George Porter, Jr. – bass
Written by Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, Matt Abts
“I’ve Been Working” written by Van Morrison
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Woody Music (SESAC)
Jake Henry Music (ASCAP) administered by Bug Music
WB Music Corp. (ASCAP) Caledonia Soul Music (ASCAP)
All rights on behalf of itself and Caledonia Soul Music administered by WB Music Corp. (ASCAP)
Different every night, this song tends to take on a new personality according to who’s playing bass. Having played it a lot with George, it has really grown into itself in an entirely different way. Original version on “Gov’t Mule” (GM1). Also appears on “Live at Roseland” (ROSE) and “Live With A Little Help From Our Friends.”

SET 2
BANKS OF THE DEEP END 6:45 CD 2/DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards and background vocal
Mike Gordon – bass and background vocal
Written by Warren Haynes, Mike Gordon, Joe Linitz
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Who Is She Music? (BMI)
Played before with Mike Gordon, who also appears on the studio version. Slightly extended arrangement but similar to the original on TDE1.
ON YOUR WAY DOWN 9:18 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and slide guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Mike Gordon – bass
Sonny Landreth – slide guitar
Written by Allen Toussaint
Screen Gems-EMI Music Publishing (BMI)/Warner-Tamerlane Publishing (BMI)
Only played a handful of times, usually with Mike Gordon, this time with Sonny Landreth as well. Inspired by the Little Feat version on “Dixie Chicken.” Sonny and I played this song together with Little Feat in Washington DC for their “Waiting For Columbus” reunion concert in fall of 2002. Original version appears on Allen Toussaint’s “Life, Love & Faith.”
32/20 BLUES 12:10 CD 2
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Will Lee – bass
Karl Denson – flute
Sonny Landreth – slide guitar
Written by Robert Johnson
Published by Lebsem II/Claud L. Johnson
Administered by Music & Media International, Inc.
I borrowed/stole this arrangement of the Robert Johnson tune from my friend Michael Henderson. First time played with Sonny or Will, however Karl had performed it with us in February, hence the flute breakdown. Will Lee is someone who was also on our “list” for “The Deep End” and we were very glad to finally work with him. Original GM version appears on “Live With A Little Help From Our Friends – Limited Edition” (LWALHFOF-LE).
DOWN AND OUT IN NEW YORK CITY 7:36 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and slide guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Will Lee – bass
Karl Denson – tenor saxophone
Fred Wesley – trombone
Written by Bodie Chandler, Barry Devorzon
Dijon Music Publishing (BMI)
We were already planning to perform this James Brown classic with Will, who has recorded with James among countless others, and Karl, who had played it with us on the February tour. Then at sound-check someone says “Fred Wesley’s around – anything you want him to play on?” Our first thought was “Down and Out,” as he had done the entire arrangement on the original James Brown version. With no time for rehearsal, he and Karl, who had played a lot together in the past, worked it up in the dressing room. This arrangement’s a little different from our version on TDE1 and way different from the original, which appears on the “Black Caesar” soundtrack.
GOIN’ DOWN 5:58 CD 2
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Roger Glover – bass
Written by Don Nix
Deerwood Music (BMI)
We’ve only performed this song a few times, mostly with Roger Glover who also plays it with Deep Purple. Kind of a hybrid of the Freddie King original version on “Getting Ready…” and the Jeff Beck Group version on their self titled album.
MAYBE I’M A LEO 5:45 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Roger Glover – bass
Written by R. Blackmore, I. Gillian, R.D. Glover, J. Lord, I. Paice
Glenwood Music Corporation/EMI Music Publishing, Inc. (ASCAP)
Woody’s favorite Deep Purple song, hence the version with Roger on TDE1. A little bluesier but very similar to the original version on Deep Purple’s “Machine Head.”
SLOW HAPPY DAYS 7:29 CD 2
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Jack Casady – bass
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
A little different approach than the original version on TDE2, which also features Casady.
VOODOO CHILE 14:33 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Jack Casady – bass
Ivan Neville – keyboards
Written by Jimi Hendrix
Experience Hendrix, LLC
Always a pleasure to play with Casady, who played on the original Hendrix version on “Electric Ladyland.” We’ve only played this song with Jack and it’s different every time. First time with Ivan.
POLITICIAN 6:50 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Conrad Lozano – bass
David Hidalgo – vocal and guitar
Written by Jack Bruce, Peter Brown
Dratleaf Music, Ltd, administered by Uni Chappel Music, Inc., (BMI)
We used to play this occasionally with Woody in the “old days” but not much anymore. Seemed like a good song to do with the Los Lobos guys since they recorded it also. Original version on Cream’s “Wheels of Fire.”
I SHALL RETURN 7:29 CD 2
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Conrad Lozano – bass
David Hidalgo – guitar
Written by Warren Haynes
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
I had run into Conrad and David in San Francisco when the ABB played multi-nights at the Warfield Theater. When I realized they were going to be in New Orleans we talked about songs to play and I thought of this one that we haven’t played much recently. Somehow the organic nature of the tune seems to fit their style. Original version appears on DOSE.
TRYING NOT TO FALL 5:48 CD 2
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – guitar
Jason Newsted – bass
Written by Warren Haynes, Danny Louis
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Normorto (BMI)
Never before performed until this night. Guitar debut by Danny who actually wrote the main riff in the song. Technical gremlins necessitated some studio “doctoring” but we wanted to include it here anyway. Original version, which also features Newsted, appears on TDE2.
GUITAR SOLO – DRUM SOLO 10:13 DVD
Warren Haynes – guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Totally unplanned. When it came time to play “Sweet Leaf” it dawned on me that I didn’t remember the words, so I mentioned it to Farmer (my “tech”), who spread the word to the staff to try and get them off the Internet, which took longer than we hoped. All the while I’m playing an improv guitar solo and when I finished – still no words. So I say to Matt, “Play!” To which he replies, “Play what?” I yell back, “Anything, we’re stalling!” With a strange expression on his face he starts playing an impromptu solo. The lyrics finally show up, Matt ends his solo and we start the song as if it’s all just part of the show.
SWEET LEAF 5:04 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Jason Newsted – bass
Written by Iommi, Osbourne, Butler, Ward
TRO-Essex Music International, Inc. (ASCAP)
Both “Sweet Leaf” and “War Pigs” seemed appropriate since Jason now plays with Ozzy. We played these a few times when he was on tour with us in 2002. Original version on Black Sabbath’s “Masters of Reality.”
WAR PIGS 12:06 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Jason Newsted – bass
Written by Iommi, Osbourne, Butler, Ward
TRO-Essex Music International, Inc. (ASCAP)
Original version on Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” and it also appears on LWALHFOF.

Danny Louis – keyboards
Les Claypool – vocal and bass
Written by Warren Haynes, Les Claypool, Matt Abts
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Long Corn Publishing (BMI)
Jake Henry Music (ASCAP) administered by Bug Music
Les was originally supposed to play earlier in the show but his show at another theater ran longer and later than expected, hence “Plan B.” He left his show and came straight to the Saenger and walked straight onstage to perform this song, which we’ve only ever done with him. (Thanks Les!) I broke a string midway through Part 1 so instead of going straight to Part 2 like we usually do I signaled Matt to stop so I could switch guitars. A little impromptu dialogue with Les and off we go to finish the tune. Very different from original version on TDE2. P.S. The “Dueling Banjos” bit was totally unplanned.
GREASY GRANNY’S GOPHER GRAVY (Part 2) 7:54 DVD

Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums

Very similar to the original version, also with Les, which appears on “Hidden Treasures,” the TDE2 bonus disc.

Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Dave Schools – bass
Written by Warren Haynes

At this point, we’ve been on stage about five hours including the set break, not to mention three hours at rehearsal that afternoon. Schools comes back on for what might be the final closer. Always different bit still always similar. Original version on Larry McCray’s “Delta Hurricane.” Also appears on LWALHFOF, TDE1 and Allman Brothers Band’s “Where It All Begins” and “2nd Set.”

WASTED TIME 7:16 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Written by Don Henley, Glenn Frey
Cass Country Music (BMI)/Red Cloud Music (BMI)
Totally unplanned. We had talked about the possibility of doing the “Thorazine-Clusterfuck” with three bass players (George, Jason, Schools) but it wasn’t definite. During the third intermission, after “Soulshine,” I called George, who had three other gigs that day, on his cell to see if he could make it back in time. He said, “I can be there in six minutes.” A few minutes later I walk out and do what I hope is going to be a verse and a chorus of “Wasted Time.” Still no George. Another verse and chorus. Still no George. Might as well do the whole song. But then what if he’s still not there? Third verse. I see that familiar smile. Home free… Thanks George! Wasted time indeed! Original version appears on the Eagles’ “Hotel California.”
THORAZINE SHUFFLE 11:39 DVD
Warren Haynes – vocal and guitar
Matt Abts – drums
Danny Louis – keyboards
Jason Newsted – bass
George Porter, Jr. – bass
Dave Schools – bass
Written by Warren Haynes, Matt Abts
Buzzard Rock Music (BMI) administered by Bug Music
Jake Henry Music (ASCAP) administered by Bug Music
Done with three bass players twice before, once in Philadelphia, once in Denver, both with Schools, Porter and Rzab. Newsted replaces Rzab for this one. Way extended arrangement, very different than previous recorded versions. Original version appears on DOSE. Also appears on LWALHFOF.
