A mere listing of the musicians presented in this LP would seem by itself to insure the prospective listeners of many moments of fine recorded jazz. They – Milt Jackson, John Lewis, Kenny Clarke, Percy Heath – all have shown in past performances, their concern for certain elements essential to good jazz, and especially good modern jazz: An insistance on “swinging”, in the broad scene of that slippery term, whether in ballads or blues or up-tempo tunes; an avoidance of the affected, pretentious “avant garde” approach which characterizes some modern groups today; and yet in reference to the latter, an awareness of the progressive nature of jazz, of such inevitable movements as the reaction of the early 1940’s leading towards bop, or of the reaction in the late 1940’s leading away from bop. These factors embody the musical ideas of the members of the “Quartet.” Individually they stand out as among the top men on their respective instruments: Jackson on vibraharps, Clarke on drums, Lewis on piano, Heath and Brown on the string bass. John Lewis furthermore has been hailed as one of the finest jazz composer-arrangers today. Collectively, they illustrate the happy medium of “tradition plus progress” mentioned above. They are heard here in fine musical form, utilizing the long and varied experience they have derived from the jazz wars of the bop and post bop periods, in bands big and small. They employ their talents like skilled craftsmen and go about their work with that case and surety which elicit rapt admiration from fans and make frustrated musicians more so.

Once again Savoy Records are proud to present another historical chapter in Jazz. Savoy has had the privilege in the past 16 years of introducing more new talent than all other companies combined including such greats as Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, Jay and Kai, Miles Davis, Kenny Clarke and too many others which we have no room to mention. (On this liner dedicated to the men shown on this cover). Continuing my discussion about firsts, we are proud to present here what was the formation of the now popular “Modern Jazz Quartet”, and the enclosed sides are the first by the group which was at that time called the “The Milt Jackson Quartet” but in actuality was a collaboration of the four men involved. At this time the groups repertoire consisted of a few Milt Jackson originals based on blues or popular changes plus the best standards. Freedom was at this time their great asset. Intros were blown by whichever member of the group called upon and themes were stated by Milt after which the jazz choruses were blown allowing each man the opportunity for expression of his own.
