THE MOODY BLUES
ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM

Original 1969 album liner notes

__________________________________________________

Veni, vidi, vici.  I was going to start this diatribe by altering the last of Caesar’s three most famous words, and making it “I was conquered”.  Passive, you see, and not active.  I thought that would be descriptive of the feeling which I experienced when I attended the sessions that have been so cunningly compressed into this over-priced album.  (Moody Blues LPs should be supplied free, like school milk and drainage services – not that there’s any connection between the two.)  Their frustrations are my frustrations and yours too, but their good times are something else.  Everybody should be allowed to share them, and to do so is to yield as willingly and enthusiastically to their music as your inhibitions allow.  When you’re sitting comfortably they let Merlin cast his spell, the seven wonders of the world are laid at your feet, and whatever repressions there are remaining will shortly be politely escorted to the exit of your mind.  Let us play.  Certainly, vicar.  We never have enough friends and we never have enough learning, but we gain a little more of each every day.  It’s because we are able to bite off and digest a slightly larger portion of the outside world than we thought we were able to yesterday.  And that’s a reaction.  The problem about reactions is that they tend to need a catalyst to trigger them off, and that’s why the Moodies are so important in my life.  Their music catalyses.  Words, instruments and voices . . . . a controlled power that is all their own.

I still haven’t looked up that Latin word, but I’ve said what I wanted to say and there doesn’t seem any need for it now.  In any case, it would have been a malaprop and looked terrible on paper.  Julius was probably cooler than me, so why should I try and alter his words.  But at least I get ten points for trying.  Even the score with your ears.

– David Symonds

. . . . And they all lived happily ever after

That’s the only way to begin
My sleeve-notes on this incredible new album
By The Moody Blues

I think it is . . . . .
Go . . .
I think it is to be . . .
Now . . .
. . . Their best . . .
. . . Go !
. . . Yet !
Yet,
There is no such best as best-to-come
At best,
You’re not ashamed to let your-time-best
Go spinning around
Relentlessly ever after . . .
. . . Until the sounds of
Last life’s loves
Submerge
Beneath the dirt
Between the grooves.

And after ?  Happily . . .
. . . I too live upon The Threshold of a Dream,
and have no plans to move.
Perhaps that’s why the Moodies knew
Exactly where to find me
When they needed words of
Identification
On the cover of their owning-up

So own up, Lionel !
Put the record on again,
And own up
Just exactly where the magic takes you
This time.

I think . . . . . . I think I love The Moody Blues.
I think . . . . . . I think they turn me on . . .
I think . . . . . . I’ll end these sleeve-notes here and now
And start a brand new masterpiece . . . . . . or something.
I think . . . . . . I think I’d like to know what you think.

So . . .
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . Go !

(You may well say that’s no way to end
A piece, a story, sleeve-notes,
Call it what you will But look !
There’s no results in art, or life.
Only beginnings.
The Moody Blues and their Producer,
Tony Clarke,
Are six of the World’s best beginners.
In my opinion.  And yes,
I’m grateful that I live
In the same Universe
At the same time.)

Which brings me to
What better ending than . . .

Once upon a time . . .

– Lionel Bart
