Consistency is a key word in the music business. In essence, it’s the ability to come up with fresh new sounds and approaches that will constantly appeal to many people, in the face of stiff competition that becomes keener with each passing day. In fact, as chart statistics point out, it’s even more difficult if the artist falls into the instrumental category.
By these standards alone, the Ventures have more than proven their “lasting power.” Not only have they had single hits over a five year period, but every one of their past fifteen albums has made a solid showing on the album best-seller charts. Furthermore, in recent years their popularity has spread with enviable speed to the farthest points on the globe.
Although luck has been a factor in almost every artist’s path to stardom, it has played almost no role in the Ventures’ career. Instead, the aforementioned ability to gear their arrangements to appeal to the widest possible audience, their choosing of the best material, and their individual talents as musicians are the big reasons for their uninterrupted chain of hit albums.
In this latest package the Ventures have chosen, in addition to their own hit single, “Slaughter On Tenth Avenue,” the “cream” of recent giant hits and have wrapped them in an inimitable instrumental style. ‘64 was, of course, the year of the English hit, and some of these are included. (Interestingly, “Sha La La,” “When You Walk In The Room” and “Love Potion No. 9” are tunes that first made the grade in the States and then found their way back here again by way of jolly old England.)
As with all previous Ventures albums, this one, too, was created for dancing. Anyone who loves to twist, frug, stomp, and jerk – to mention only a few – will have a ball with this instrumental “discotheque.” As I mentioned before, the Ventures have scored with every previous album. It’s a cinch they’ve scored another “bullseye” here.
