The Byrds Collection

Originally hailed as America's answer to The Beatles (a dubious honour later bestowed on The Monkees), The Byrd's contribution to rock music history remains significant. They were arguably the originators of folk-rock and for a brief 12 month period virtually dominated the music scene both sides of the Atlantic.

The group - Jim McGuinn, Gene Clark, Dave Crosby and Chris Hillman - began playing folk bars and colleges at a time when the folk music scene was burgeoning. Their first single Please Let Me Love You was released under the name The Beefeaters on Elektra Records in the autumn of 1964 but soon afterwards they changed their name to The Byrds and signed to CBS Records.

Their first international hit was a cover of Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man which here in the UK hit number one in June 1965 and was in the chart for 14 weeks. Their follow-up All I Really Want To Do faced strong competition from a cover version by Cher but still managed to reach number four. There were two more memorable hits, Turn! Turn! Turn! in November 1965, and Eight Miles High in May 1966 before their chart career started its rapid wane. It was another two years before they attained another hit, You Ain't Going Nowhere, and that only managed a feeble climb to number 45, and in February 1971 they finally said goodbye to chart success with Chestnut Mare, although admittedly it wasn't such a dismal failure, at least managing to climb into the top 20.

Notwithstanding the lack of hit singles, The Byrds still managed to become an important part of American rock history. They produced a fine string of albums including Mr. Tambourine Man, Turn! Turn! Turn!, Fifth Dimension and Younger Than Yesterday, although the latter two were more influenced by electronics than folk rock, inevitably however, unrest rose within the group and there were the mandatory departures and arrivals of personnel, most notably that of the group's major songwriter Gene Clark in late 1965.

This collection is a reminder of The Byrds' Sixties successes and some of the other fine album tracks that they produced, including a version of Carole King's Goin' Back (a huge hit for Dusty Springfield), So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star and 5D (Fifth Dimension). A valuable slice of pop history.
