Southern Californians in 1962 were quick to spot and adopt as an anthem The Beach Boys’ “Surfin’.” The single, originally released on the tiny, local Candix label, was picked up by Capitol in a prescient move that launched the Boys’ international stardom.

But who in 1962 could have predicted that 27 years later, The Beach Boys would still be riding the crest of popular music?

Probably not even the group themselves – even granting the quality and wit of the lyrics and the quantum leap in arrangement and production. How far, after all, can a band continue celebrating the wonders of girls, cars, surf and sand?

Yet in 1988, The Beach Boys enjoyed one of the biggest hits of their career, their first No. 1 single since 1966’s “Good Vibrations.”

The song, of course, was “Kokomo,” composed and performed for the soundtrack of the hit film “Cocktail.” A delightful confection concocted as a collaboration between The Beach Boys’ Mike Love, The Mamas And The Papas’ John Phillips and Scott McKenzie, and long-time Beach Boy pal Terry Melcher, the tropically-accented song was cooler than a piña colada.

“STILL CRUISIN’” gathers ten Beach Boys triumphs. Most of them are previously unavailable on any of the group’s albums, and five of them are brand new.

Three are old Brian Wilson classics, featured in recent films including “The Big Chill,” “Soul Man” and “Good Morning Vietnam.” Because, as any number of film, television and commercial producers know, there’s nothing that guarantees a good-time feeling like a Beach Boys song.

The older songs here are part of any music fan’s deep consciousness. “I Get Around” dates back to 1964’s “All Summer Long,” an album that once again confirmed Brian Wilson as a topnotch producer. The single held down the No. 1 position on Billboard’s pop chart for three weeks.

The eternal verity of “California Girls” is reflected in David Lee Roth’s hit 1985 remake; he was ten years old when the 1965 original climbed to No. 3. And “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” was the optimistic love song – and second single released – from 1966’s classic “Pet Sounds” album. It hit No. 8, paving the way for the band’s next single, “Good Vibrations.”

“Wipe Out” may have been the least likely hit of 1987; a revival of the Surfaris’ 1966 hit instrumental, reworked as a friendly battle-of-the-bands between prototypical Southern Californians The Beach Boys and roisterous Brooklyn-born rappers The Fat Boys.

Among the newest songs are the engaging and instantly classic “Island Girl, which is an Al Jardine original, “Somewhere Near Japan” is a second collaboration between The Beach Boys’ extended family and Papa John Phillips, “Make It Big,” composed by Mike Love, Terry Melcher and guitarist Bill House, “Still Cruisin’” by Love and Melcher, and “In My Car” which is a new Brian Wilson original, co-written by Eugene E. Landy and Alexandra Morgan.

During The Beach Boys’ recent summer tour, Mike Love would ask the audience how many among them were 25 or older – and typically, about half would raise their hands. When Love asked how many were younger than 25 – younger than the group itself – the other half of the crowd would stand and cheer.

“Still Cruisin’” indeed!

– June 1989
